MY STORY

Hi, I’m Anzel. I’m a design-devotee, ambitious business woman and wedding industry fundi. White Kite Studio is a platform for me to create and make people smile.

I was born in Durban, raised in Pretoria, lived and worked in the USA and Amsterdam before moving back to Johannesburg and then finally to my dream home, Cape Town, South Africa. I’m a sucker for travel and living in different cities, and as a creative I love to find inspiration in culture, history and the beauty of nature.

My journey as a designer started around eight years old, when I realised I wanted to do something creative for the rest of my life. I’ve always been drawn to art and creativity, and from a very young age I knew that I needed to make things.

As I turned 16, I began working at a wedding venue, every Saturday for 3 years. I decorated tables by day and waited them by night. Back then it was a simple weekend job for some extra pocket money, but I also loved seeing a wedding every Saturday! Being comfortable with weddings led to another side-line job in my early university years. I tried my hand at wedding photography for about a year, but discovered fairly quickly that it wasn’t my forte. This immediately led to the better decision of using my design skills to help people with wedding invitations, and I’ve been doing it ever since 2010. These experiences allowed me to see weddings from all kinds of angles, and has really deepened my relationship with the industry. Overall, I’ve been actively involved with the wedding industry for over 13 years now, and I can truly say that I’m head-over-heels in love with it.

When it came to my studies I was super unsure of what I wanted to do; creativity was waving its arm in the air wildly at me, but so was Business and Marketing. I’ve always loved creating, but I also enjoyed using the more analytical side of my brain. Which is why I took on both Business and Design courses in the USA while I figured it all out. Returning afterwards to South Africa, I finished a BA Hons degree in Information Design (Cum Laude) and was lucky to have one of my visual journals published. I then moved on to start a career as an Art Director in advertising. Although ultimately it was not the thing that set my heart on fire, I learned how to think on my feet, master a message for maximum impact and juggle eighty-nine things at once!

“Do more of what makes you happy.”

I’m a firm believer that life’s too short to dedicate yourself to work that you don’t absolutely love. I quit my advertising job and officially launched White Kite Studio in February 2014, as a place for work and play. The studio is a creative sanctuary to experiment, express my ideas and make dreams happen! Every day I continue to learn and grow as my business blossoms beside me, and I’m grateful for every brave and brilliant client I have who shares this rollercoaster of a journey with me.

I married the love of my life, Johan, in 2012 – so to all the brides out there? I get you! I know the kaleidoscope of emotions you go through in the run up to your wedding – the tidal wave of anxiety, the utter nervousness and overwhelming excitement. At the end of the day I really care deeply about you and your day and will work hard to make sure you have something you can be proud of, and is a true reflection of you and your partner.
